Introduction
Hi my lovely audience! For today's cup of tea, I will be talking about how our team switched our original film opening idea like three times.. SO let's get into it!
Our first idea
For our first concept, we wanted to do an opening about a girl who gets bullied to death, and how a student detective finds out that the school hid this girl's death to look pleasing to the public. While the student detective gets closer to the truth, there are those who are hunting her every moment, trying to get her before she spreads the school's horrible secret. As you can see, we were going for a horror opening, with strong elements of mystery and even comedy. We actually filmed the scenes for this film opening for other assignments.
Why did we change this idea?
We changed this idea because we thought it was too bland and boring. We wanted more pizzazz, and more themes that our target audience would relate to. A character getting bullied is such a common trope for storytelling in film, so we wanted to completely get rid of it and start anew.
Our next two ideas
So, we had a total of two ideas for this part. We all believed that these ideas were interesting, so we had to choose between the two, and we chose the second one because it felt like something unique. We also included lots of social issues in the second idea, like sexism, racism, abuse of power, etc.
First idea:
A 15/16 year old girl who is wise and focused in her studies is set on one thing (revenge to her bullies or school enemies). One of her bullies starts to have a crush on her after noticing her glow-up (like at soccer/basketball practice or in the school gym working out) and starts seeing her everywhere. One day when the girl spoke to her friends, this man (a fake nice guy) tries to flirt with her and finds out she's not what she seems. Her revengeful attitude led her to subconsciously manipulate him to follow her everywhere. In the end, the man follows her to a strange room, but it turns out he locked the door behind him. The stakes are high, and while they are both trapped, they reflect on their motives and decide to change their attitudes.

Second Idea(the one we chose):
Piper High has all students under mind control (by taking pills or by watching a video). In this mockumentary, it demonstrates the symptoms of this zombie-like state. The mind control is supposed to make people submissive, but a few anomalies are bad and seek to destroy/take the sanity of the main cast who are the only ones who know the truth of the mind control. Our main group of characters refused to take it & decided to try and warn everyone about it. The villains are prejudiced (sexism and racism is obvious, due to our main cast being diverse in races and sexes), and the mind controlled population is racist and sexist too but in a subtle way, Through much compassion, nonconformity, wisdom, and charisma, they are able to successfully release people from mind control.
Why did we change our chosen idea?
My group changed this idea because of the limited time we had. We did not know how to carry out this idea. If we had more materials and even more time, this idea maybe would have been possible. It was such a cool idea too, because of the mockumentary element we would interpret into the film. It would be like the show, "The Office".
Our finalized idea.
My teammate, Marley B, came up with our lovely plan for our film opening that would not be a pain to create! It includes elements of suspense, romance, horror, and some bits of comedy.
Synopsis:
Our main character/hero Mercedes, has an old childhood friend named Christine, who is deeply infatuated with her. Through desperate acts of attention from Mercedes (like stealing her bracelet, following her to class), Christine quickly sees that her feelings are not being reciprocated, so she does everything that she can do to change Mercedes' mind.
We made sure to include a character who is part of the LGBT+ community, to be more inclusive and to draw in the target audience. In my opinion, this idea is an awesome plan!
Reflection
Our group went through a lot of changes with our final idea for our film opening. We decided that we wanted to keep horror as our main genre, but we definitely experimented with the many sub-genres we can have. From mockumentary, to romance, we found the sub-genre that fit our style and liking. My teammates and I worked together to form ideas, which was the best part of the assignment! Thanks for reading, see you next time :D
