Preliminary Exercise 5: Analyzing Film Genre

 INTRODUCTION

Hi guys! For today's task, we are discussing genres and subgenres! Let's start.
Genre is how a piece of media is categorized. The genre of a media product is determined based on its content. For example, horror is a genre. If a movie had elements like a scary character or a terrifying plot, it would be considered a horror film.
Genre is important for filmmakers because it's a way to express the emotions the film is trying to display. Genre is important for the audience because it can help the audience understand a film's message.
Four examples of genres in film are comedy, action, thriller, and romance.
A subgenre is a smaller genre of a bigger category. The importance of subgenres is to let the audience specifically choose their type of film. For example, if someone likes supernatural films and thriller films, they would probably love to watch a supernatural thriller film.
My favorite kind of film genre that I enjoy watching is romance comedy. I am a hopeless romantic, and I love watching love blossom between two characters, while including comedic jokes.

The purpose of this assignment was to understand genres and subgenres more clearly. For this task, my partner and I chose psychological horror. We chose this option because it seemed more easier and more interesting to research about.
(Genre) Horror- a genre where its purpose is to disturb or scare the viewers.
(Subgenre) Psychological Horror- a subgenre where its intention is to disturb the audiences mentally, making them feel emotions like anxiety.
Iconography is signs that we associate with a specific genre. For example, we associate scary masks with horror films.
Narrative themes are the central topic of the film, but like a moral of the story. For example, good vs. evil is a narrative theme,
Genre: Horror
Subgenre: Psychological Horror
Iconography: The use of shadows, broken glass, curses/spirits, animals running away.
Narrative theme: Death, fear, misery, rage
Tone and atmosphere: grim, psychotic

Jack Torrance from Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining.

Reflection

To summarize, the objective of this assignment was to create a poster based on a subgenre of our choosing, and we documented 3 types of mis en scene specific to that genre. The media text we created was a bubble diagram poster, and the purpose was to understand subgenre more deeply, and being able to make our own story with a subgenre. For this assignment, I designed the poster and wrote down the details, while my partner came up with the story. The only technology used in this assignment was a laptop and google (for research), and I say that we are experts.
In this exercise, we discovered knowledge about genres and their subgenres, iconography, and narrative themes! By putting our heads together, we were able to successfully complete our task and reach our goal. Thanks for your attention! P is signing off.
