Preliminary Exercise 3: What is Mise en Scene?

Define what is "Mise en Scene"

Welcome to my blog post! Today, we will be discussing "Mise en Scene", and the way its used in films. Mise en Scene is the arrangement of actors, props, and the stage design in one scene. The purpose of Mise en Scene is to inform the audience about the characters, their lifestyle, and the kind of world they live in.

The eight elements of Mise en Scene are:

  • Setting
  • Acting
  • Costume
  • Hair and Makeup
  • Color
  • Set Design
  • Composition
  • Lighting
The movie I chose for this assignment was the movie "Us", created by Jordan Peele. In my eyes, I interpreted this movie as a warning. That we have to be on the lookout for the "doppelgangers" in our own world. Peele explained that the meaning for the movie was “What I have talked about so far is that we as a culture, we are afraid of invaders. We are afraid of the outsider. Our fear lies in this idea that there’s a bad guy is coming to get us. This movie is about the fact that we are our own worst enemy.”

Understanding mise en scene is beneficial for a film because it can help the audience connect with the media source. If we break apart the scene bit by bit, we can better understand it.

Graphic Organizer + A little bit of extra information

Reflection

Overall, in this activity, the objective was to create a graphic organizer based on the elements of Mise en Scene using a movie. To complete this objective, I created a PowerPoint breaking down the movie "Us" bit by bit using the elements of Mise en Scene. I made this using my computer. I think that I am a pro at using this application.
In this exercise, I learned more about the significance of Mise en Scene. It enhances the film better, so that audiences can fully enjoy it in all of its glory. Thanks for swinging by! P is taking her leave now.
