Preliminary Exercise 2: Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics Analysis

 Introduction Paragraph

Hello folks! Welcome back to my blog. Today, we are talking about an important theorist who created the semiotics theory. Ladies and gentlemen, let's get into it!

A French Literary Theorist named Roland Barthes theorized that for a meaning to be developed, a culture is required to agree on it, and it grows into a myth's philosophy. He also studied the relationship denotation and connotation. Connotation uses its denotation as its signifier and connects it to its signified. For instance, an apple. An apple's denotation is "You eat an apple." But an apple's connotation could be "An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Eating an apple is usually associated with healthiness." His theory is helpful to a film's planning process because, like Saussure's theory, it helps you think deeper from a sign's physical image. You dive deep into the true meaning of it.

The objective of this exercise is to notice and define visual and audible signs when examining media products.

Our class was instructed to research a clip from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. In summary, the clip was about the Districts coming together to undergo another rebellion; a protest.

One audio code of the scene was the beginning. When Katniss' white dress transformed into a beautiful black dress with wings. The host is astonished at this surprising reveal. "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my.. It's a bird, and it's.. it's got feathers and it's like a bir-it's like a bird.. it's like um..." His repetition of his phrases and the constant stuttering shows his admiration and fascination with the dress. The audience also shared the same reaction, because they gave her a standing ovation. This shows that they love the dress she's wearing.

One visual sign of this scene is the costume. The black dress that Katniss' changed into, it's a symbol of disobedience; of an uprising about to take place. It is a message to the audience that she doesn't care what they think about the dress.

Another visual sign of this scene is the setting. The setting is a large stage with warm colors like yellow, red, orange, and other colors like brown and black. There are two parts of the stage, a higher part and a lower part(main stage). You can see the other participants sitting on chairs on the higher part of the stage, while the host and Katniss are standing at the main portion of the stage. They are all standing in front of a large crowd. The connotation of this sign could be that although they are physically gathered into a space, they are not equal at all. There are two sides of the same coin.

One last visual sign of this scene is the acting. In one of the shots, when the host is praising Katniss' stylist, an older man is seen watching this whole event happening. His face looks slightly frustrated. This could symbolize that he does not agree with Katniss' side.

Reflection
In this exercise, we had to carefully study an example of a media product, and have the ability to recognize the visual and audio cues. The process of this task was fairly easy. By re-watching the clip, and by using our powerpoint presentation, this was finished easily.
This media text is a presentation, and the purpose for creating it was to better our understanding of pointing out visual and audible cues. Another purpose of the presentation was to help us practice denotations and connotation.
My partner and I used google, and powerpoint the most. I believe that I am an expert at using both of those.
In these slides, I documented the theorist Roland Barthes, his theory, and the signs that we studied from the clip. There were two students, My partner and I. We both split up the work, and did research and designing the powerpoint together.
In this assignment, I learned how to spot both audio and visual signs better. I now know that when looking for these signs, you should look for things like the costume, the props, or the acting. Or even the script. Thank you for your presence. P is exiting now.
