Preliminary Exercise 15: Planning, Filming, Recording and Editing Sound in Film in a Shot.

 i. Introduction

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my blog post. I am extremely glad that I am able to feed you my experience working with sound in film.
So, in my last post, I discussed different types of sound in film like diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound. For today, my teammates and I experimented with this newfound knowledge, by creating a short scene with various types of sound effects. So, I am going to tell you, step by step, how we were able to create this scene.

First Day: Planning

So, for the first day, we originally planned to do a scene from our movie. We agreed that it would be easier since we already had all the information we needed. Here was our original plan:
But then, we decided we wanted to be creative storytellers! So, my teammate Khloe R. and I started brainstorming and we came up with a cool idea for our scene. Here was our revised plan!:
  1. Scenario: Bathroom

Video Synopsis

A girl named Candice zones out as she washes her hands in a bathroom of a party, thinking she is alone. Bass-boosting music blasts in the background, however, is abruptly interrupted by the intercom warning that the building of the party is on a lockdown due to an unidentified attendee. Candice becomes unsettled and tries to finish freshening up in the bathroom, but before she leaves, she hears a noise coming from the stalls. While hesitant at first, she investigates the first stall which is empty, and she only slightly looks at the second stall before turning around to make her way out of the bathroom. Before she could take a single step, a cold hand aggressively grips her shoulder and drags her as she screams for help. The camera, then, suddenly cuts away.

In my opinion, the planning process was so stressful.. I couldn't really come up with ideas on the spot, so it was hard to think of some new ideas but we did it! Now that we chose our plan, it was now time to film the video.

Second Day: A Successful Filming Process

Now it's time to film the video! My teammates and I ventured off to one of the school bathrooms (luckily it was empty) to take a series of videos. It took us 8 tries to finally get the outcome we wanted. This was the most fun part of the whole assignment, because we filmed so many bloopers. Everyone did an awesome job doing their part! This is the video :)

ii. Reflection

For today's assignment, my teammates and I planned a short scene using our knowledge about sound! We utilized all the sounds that we could think of. Here are some of the sounds we used!:
  • The sound of the water faucet running
  • The sound of someone banging on the bathroom stall
  • The sound of footsteps
  • The sound of bathroom doors opening
  • Dramatic sound effects
I would love to thank my teammates for their hard work and help! Lexi M was the amazing main character, Khloe R was the awesome sound director, and Marley B did a great job with acting as the second character in this video! I was the camerawoman, responsible for recording the shots, and I was also the editor, responsible for putting the shots together, and adding some extra sound effects.
Personally, I believe this assignment was the BEST, although stressful to plan. I really enjoyed recording the scenes. It was super fun to do! I think my teammates and I learned so much from this exercise.
Thank you for reading! See you next time. P is signing off.
