Preliminary Exercise 12: Camera Movement Videos

 Introduction

Welcome back to the blog guys! Today I will be sharing with you the camera movement videos we created from our storyboard. Let's get into it.
So, the objective of this assignment was to select 6 camera movement frames from our previously made storyboard and make 6 camera movement videos showing that we fully grasp the concept of camera movements.
The supplies needed to make this assignment were:
  • Our phones
  • The storyboard sheet
  • Laptops (for extra research)
As you can see, we didn't need so many supplies to complete the assignment, since we already had our camera movement shots planned.
Speaking of camera movement shots, the techniques we used were:
  • Zoom-In Shot
  • Dolly Push-Out Shot
  • Static Shot
  • Dolly Push-In
  • Pan
  • Tracking
The reason why we chose these techniques is because, our team collectively decided that these shots would effectively portray the story better and clearer. You can tell the tone the scene is supposed to be set in.

The videos (finally!)

First shot: Zoom-In Shot

Lexi (the main character) is shown lying in the theatre stairs.
Tone: Unsettling
Shot Size: Establishing Shot
Angle: High Angle
Framing: One Shot

Second Shot: Dolly Zoom

Lexi, and her friend, is shown walking down the hallways of their school. Students around them are distracted on their phones.
Tone: Casual, Lighthearted
Shot Size: Full Shot
Angle: Shoulder
Framing: Crowd Shot

Third Shot: Static Shot

Lexi and her friend bully a student.
Tone: Menacing
Shot Size: Master Shot
Angle: Shoulder
Framing: Three Shot

Fourth Shot: Push-In Shot

Tone: Anxious, Horrified
Shot Size: Medium Close Up Shot
Angle: Eye Level
Framing: Single Shot

Fifth Shot: Dolly In Shot

A blurry flashback of a contract stating that Piper High is a cult and that the school covered Lexi’s death, appears on the screen, which then creates situational irony.
Tone: Shocking
Shot Size: Medium Shot
Angle: Dutch Shot
Framing: Insert Shot

Sixth Shot: Pan Shot

After a student at Piper High School discover their school’s contract and the truth behind their peer’s death, the students decided to reveal everything about their school. The intercom blazes in every classroom and hallway, in which this scene shows two students at Piper High School briefly taking notice to their announcement, but eventually continued about their days.
Tone: Hopeful
Shot Size: Extreme Close Up
Angle: Dutch
Framing: Insert Shot

Seventh Shot(Bonus Shot): Tracking/Trucking Shot

The student, who exposed the truth about her school on the intercom, gets interrupted in the middle of her announcement, by getting escorted by Piper High School’s security.
Tone: Weary, Terror
Shot Size: Medium Shot
Angle: Knee Level
Framing: Over-The-Shoulder Shot

Reflection

In this exercise, I learned firsthand how to be a photographic director. I got to experience filming specific camera movements for shots. I was mostly the camerawoman (I was a background character in one shot), while Lexi M. was one of the actors. Marley B. was also an actor sometimes, and Khloe R. was a director and a background character. They did a WONDERFUL job acting out the scenes. It really portrayed the story being told.
This assignment was kind of hard for my team. Even though our shots were planned out, it would take us a really long time to film a shot. So, it took us a couple of days to fully complete this assignment, but we finally did! It was a tedious but rewarding experience. Thanks for hearing me out! P is officially signing off for today.
